July 15 minor breakthroughI've had a minor breakthrough today. I repaired the overenthusiastic welding that blew the hole by sawing off the offending cylinder and filing down the weld. I discovered that in spite of it being messy it is a good strong solid weld. All I have to do now is practice making it look neat but that will come with time. I also discovered that the cylinder was slightly off centre which I can now rectify.
some one let off a loud firework outside while I was in the shed and I was quite flattered when Marie thought I'd blown up the shed, (must be the child in me).
Ive started to make a jig that will hold all the cylinders in place while I tack weld them on.
when the cylinders are in position I am going to have to work out a way of honing them to size. July 14 global warmingMarie bought me a massive bottle of co2 for my birthday and a valve with some pretty preasure guages on the top so I've booted up the mig welder straight into overdrive and blown a hole through the first cylinder of the engine whilst depositing vast amounts of molten globules of wire all over the place. I've now turned down the settings on the mig and set about practicing on some scrap metal.
Although the tools are coming together now the lack of skill is begining to show through but practice makes perfect and there is more than one way to skin a cat July 11 warming to the taskWell I've had a go at brazing or brasing (however its spelt) and it didn't go to plan. I popped round to see my dad the other day and he had a blow torch which he was kind enough to donate to the cause, so I went and bought fifty quid’s worth of brazing rods and flux, positioned the parts that need brazing and set about heating them to a nice cherry red. However, the cherry red never materialised and the brazing rod could only manage to bend with the heat. No sign of melting at all. The chap in the welding supply shop said that their brazing torches were only suitable for oxy/acetylene gas and that appears to be out of the question for the moment but I may go down that road if I can find some smallish bottles. In the mean time I may have to repair the old mig welder and give it some heavy duty fixing(but I'd rather not at this point). July 06 unconfirmed progressI'm not very good at this blog buisiness, I spend a few hours in the shed and have the intention of writing about it with the aid of photos but when it comes down to it I get so wrapped up in what I'm doing that I forget the pictures and the discription is to long winded. I can't go back and take photo's because I would have to undo whats been done, I really have to make more effort. anyroadup I need a brasing torch now and am just going to look them up on the net to see whats available |
